Volatility is the reason to size formally
Crypto routinely moves several percent in an hour, so stops sit further from entry than in equities. A wider stop is not a problem for a risk-first trader — it simply produces a smaller coin quantity. The problem is keeping the same coin quantity as volatility expands, which silently multiplies the money at risk.
Enter the stop where the idea fails and let the quantity fall out of the calculation. On a $10,000 account risking 1%, a 12% stop distance on Bitcoin gives roughly $833 of notional exposure — small, and correct.
Leverage, margin and liquidation
On perpetual futures your position value divided by leverage is the isolated margin posted. Liquidation happens when losses approach that margin, so a stop-loss placed beyond the liquidation price never executes — the exchange closes you first.
Two habits keep this safe: keep the stop comfortably inside the liquidation distance, and treat leverage as a margin-efficiency tool rather than a way to increase size. If required margin exceeds your balance, the calculator says so directly.

Low-priced tokens and rounding
For tokens priced in fractions of a cent the quantity runs into millions of units, and the calculator keeps eight decimals of precision so the sizing does not collapse into rounding error. Check your exchange's minimum order increment and step size, and round down: rounding up puts you over your risk limit.
Funding, fees and slippage eat the nominal result
On perpetual futures, funding is charged periodically against notional value, so a large leveraged position bleeds even while flat. Exchange fees and the slippage from market orders on illiquid pairs apply to the full notional too. For multi-day holds these costs can be a significant share of your intended risk.
Two habits keep the math honest: subtract expected funding and round-trip fees from the risk amount, and use the position value column to estimate your total fee bill before entering.
Portfolio-level risk in crypto
Crypto correlations are high in stress events — nearly everything sells off together — and reset quickly. Sizing five coins at 1% each is close to a 5% combined bet when they move as one market, and leverage multiplies the exposure.
Treat the portfolio as a single risk book. Decide a total portfolio risk limit, spread it across uncorrelated or hedged ideas, and keep isolated margin separated per position to avoid liquidation cascades.
Stops on low-priced tokens: step sizes and exchange rules
Exchanges enforce minimum order increments, step sizes and, on some venues, price tick rules that can interfere with a tightly placed stop. Round the coin quantity down to the exchange step and verify the venue supports a stop-loss at your intended distance; some derivatives exchanges only accept stops at fixed price ticks.
Rounding down means you risk less than planned; rounding up means more. When the step size forces a meaningful rounding error, widen the stop and reduce size rather than accepting an oversized order.
